How’s this for a great way to start 2014 – five new Ekhidna wines!

Matt Rechner’s latest creations are three beautiful new whites – Adelaide Hills Arneis, Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, and Adelaide Hills Fiano – and new releases of two reds for which he is rightly famous – McLaren Vale Grenache Shiraz and his baby, Ekhidna’s flagship McLaren Vale Linchpin Shiraz.

All are available for tasting at our McLaren Vale cellar door and for purchase in the Ekhidna online store!

With a deep red colour and concentrated flavour of blackberries on the palate, there is also a hint of spice. Careful selection of new and 2-year old French oak has resulted in tannins that are well-integrated and extremely soft, giving great length. The nose is quite delicate and lifted giving the wine some floral characteristics with hints of capsicum.

This one is a big softy, not your typical Cabernet! Pick up the new 2011 Ekhidna Cabernet from our online shop.

We’re very pleased and proud to confirm that the 2010 Ekhidna Shiraz and 2010 Linchpin Shiraz have received high praise in the summer edition of Wine Showcase magazine!

2010 Ekhidna Shiraz

“Sweet blackberry fruit aromas. Great wine with a slight chocolate character and elegant yet powerful tannins. 94 points / Gold Medal.

2010 Linchpin Shiraz

“A great wine with ripe rich varietal berry and raspberry fruit mingled with some nice oak. Excellent length and finish. 93 points / Gold Medal.

Nice work Mr Rechner!

Now, on to the conclusions!

The Shiraz grapes in McLaren Vale are going through veraison – when the grapes turn from green to red – which is a French term meaning “the onset of ripening”. As you might have guessed veraison is when the berries stop growing and start ripening…. (read more)
